Dear Mr. Prime Minister:
I write this letter to draw your attention to a press release of July 7, 2012 wherein it was mentioned that top BJP leaders led by Mr. L.K. Advani had met you regarding the question of saving the ancient Dhara Devi shrine in Garhwal, which was in danger of being sub-merged with the building of the Srinagar Dam. The said press release quotes you as having assured “the delegation that Dhara Devi shrine would be protected and will not be allowed to be sub-merged”. However, subsequent developments show that, perhaps without your knowledge, the attempt is on to raise the water level of the Dam to the point where Dhara Devi would indeed be sub-merged. The alternative mentioned is lifting the murti in the temple, and putting it somewhere. This is not according to the Hindu religion since Dhara Devi temple was built after pranapratishta puja which makes the temple property of the Goddess and hence cannot be removed.
I write this letter therefore to enquire if your commitment given to the BJP delegation stands. I am proposing to bring the matter to the Supreme Court, hence I am anxious to know your approach to the issue, in writing.
