Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has come under sharp criticism by former NDA minister Arun Shourie for his comments on Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Shourie has accused Singh of destroying the Prime Minister's post. Singh in a press conference recently had said that Modi as the PM would be disastrous for the country.
Defending Modi, Shourie also added that there was no reason for him to apologise for the 2002 riots.
Shourie was speaking to CNN-IBN Deputy Editor Sagarika Ghose in a special series 'Ideas 2014' which is aimed at bringing together the best political minds to look ahead to the upcoming general elections.
Here is an excerpt of the conversation with Arun Shourie:
Sagarika Ghose: Has Manmohan Singh been judged a little too harshly? You have heard him say history will judge me better than the contemporary media.
Arun Shourie: I am furious with this man. Everybody hoped so much from him. He has given good men a bad name. People will say get a crook let him do something.
This man's core competence is to deflect blame on others, on Raja, some secretary of coal, on the world economic situation.
He has destroyed the basic pillar of governance in India and that is the Prime Minister.
Sagarika Ghose: You are a great supporter of Narendra Modi but he has a spotted record.
Arun Shourie: In what sense?
Sagarika Ghose: He is seen as a polariser. Do you believe as a Prime Minister of India you can have that kind of polarising identity?
Arun Shourie: Sagarika the problem is. These are words that the media invents.
Sagarika Ghose: Were he to apologise, were Modi to apologise and express remorse, do you think that will give a big boost to his popularity?
Arun Shourie: Immediately people will say he is doing it for elections. The record is yes there was a breakdown and it has never happened again in Gujarat and I would hope that he would stand on that and not go in for this apology and so on that's nonsense.
