On 31 December 2007 when a meeting was held by Rameshwaram Ramasetu Protection Movement in Rohini Park in New Delhi nearly 15 lakh people from all over India assembled to declare: Protect Ramasetu. This was the largest public meeting every held in the annals of Indian history.
The setu channel project does NOT make any nautical sense because the proposed channel of 11 ft. depth will only allow for small ships of less than 30000 tonnage to navigate the channel. Most maritime tonnage is carried on large ships, some as large as carrying 2 million tons of fossil fuel.
The setu channel will also result in a national security disaster because if another tsunami strikes (like the one which struck on 26 Dec. 2006 and which was diverted by Ramasetu), the channel will act like a funnel absorbing the energy of the tsunami and cause enormous devastation to the southern coast and devastate ports like Tuticorin or Vizhinjam. This is the opinion of tsunami experts and another tsunami is likely because of the plate tectonics recurring on the India-Burma plate boundary.

So intense is the religious fervor associated with Sri Rama who symbolises the very unity and integrity of Bharata Rashtram -- from the pilgrimage sites and pariyatras of Rameshwaram to Varanasi to Badrinath.For those seeking secular evidences for Sri Rama and Ramasetu, Malaysian Federation offers the living memory of Ramarajyam and sculptures on the largest vishnu temple of the globe, Angkor Wat cherish the memory of Setubandha.

This is a memory recollected from Bharata's coronation of Rama Paduka during Rama's exiled life in the forests. Bharatam janam is the phrase used by Vishwamitra in Rigveda to refer to the people of Bharata. Bharata is the younger brother of Rama in Valmiki Ramayana.

The House witnessed uproarious scenes on the issue, with BJP and the government trading charges, accusing each other of playing politics and not having faith in God, as DMK and AIADMK members joined in.NEW DELHI: The issue of Ram Sethu rocked Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with BJP asking the government to withdraw its affidavit given in court on plans to dismantle it, leading to acrimonious exchanges and consequent adjournment of the House.
The House witnessed uproarious scenes on the issue, with BJP and the government trading charges, accusing each other of playing politics and not having faith in God, as DMK and AIADMK members joined in.
As BJP and the treasury benches traded charges against each other, E M S Natchiappan, who was in the chair, adjourned the House till 2pm amid acrimonious scenes.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Prakash Javadekar (JP) asked the government to withdraw its affidavit given in court on its decision to dismantle the structure and said they will not allow this to happen.
He also asked the government to agree to recommendations of the Pachauri expert committee's suggestion for a different alignment without dismantling the Ram Sethu structure, to which the government is not agreeing.
BJP members stood up after minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla accused the party of playing politics on the issue for votes and later trooped into the Well raising slogans for taking back the affidavit given by the Centre.
"Affidavit wapas lo, wapas lo," (Take back the affidavit), they chanted even as AIADMK and DMK also raised slogans leading to the adjournment of the House.
Javadekar accused government of not being concerned about public and religious sentiments as also of preserving ancient heritage and demanded withdrawal of the affidavit.
He warned that an agitation would be launched if the government did not do so.
