Govt tables GST Bill in Rajya Sabha amid protests, Jaitley slams Congress

(PTI photo)The Union government’s attempt to introduce the much awaited Goods and Services Tax Bill bill in the Rajya Sabha was thwarted by slogan shouting Congress members who ensured that the House was adjourned without any discussion on the subject.
As soon as deputy chairman PJ Kurien asked Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to move the motion for introducing Constitution’s 122 amendment bill that aims to bring in a uniform Goods and Services Tax across the country, the Congress members rushed to the well of the House shouting slogans just like they have done throughout the Monsoon Session during which no business has been conducted in the Upper House.
Kurien said he could not conduct business amidst the protests and adjourned the House till Wednesday.

Before the House could be adjourned, Jaitley hit out at the Congress party, saying it was blocking the economic progress of the country, and that their protest, apparently against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s involvement in the Lalit Modi affair, was only a pretext to hide their opposition to the GST bill.
“The real purpose is that they want to stall the economic progress of the country. The issue relating to the External Affairs Minister is merely a pretext. The real reason is that they don’t want the Indian economy to grow and that is why session after session they have been looking for one pretext or the other to make sure that the GST legislation which will give a boost to India’s GDP and economy, is not passed,” Jaitley said.
“If the Congress party wants the economy of the country to slow down, when e very other political party is in support of it, they must candidly say so. They don’t need any pretext in order to say this,” he said.
