Autorickshaw driver B. Narasimha was on M.G. Road at the time of the blast. Someone sought his help, he told The Hindu. He turned into Church Street when he saw the injured. He agreed to take them to the nearby hospital.
He thought Bhavani Devi was dead as she was bleeding from the head. Karthick had injuries on his back. The entire family, nine members in all, wanted to get inside the auto. Somehow, he accommodated all of them in the autorickshaw and took them to Mallya hospital

Blast in Bangalore's party street

- Lady killed, terror on radar

Bangalore, Dec. 28: A low-intensity blast rocked Bangalore's party zone in the heart of the city this evening, killing a 38-year-old woman and injuring her relative.
City police chief M.N. Reddi "did not rule out" a terror angle in the 8.30pm attack on Church Street - Bangalore's equivalent of Calcutta's Park Street.
The blast came barely two weeks after threats of "revenge attacks" on social media following the arrest of alleged Islamic State (IS) propagandist Mehdi Masroor Biswas, a young executive who hails from Bengal.
The woman who died today was identified as Bhavani, a visitor from Tamil Nadu. Her relative, Karthik, is in hospital and "completely out of danger, said Reddi, adding it was not clear how the two were related.
Reddi said no one had owned up to the incident so far but added that the investigators were working on the evidence for clues.
On the possibility of a terror angle, he said: "It cannot be ruled out."
Some TV channels reported that two suspects had been picked up tonight but Reddi denied it. "Nobody has been detained."
According to the police commissioner, the bomb went off outside Coconut Grove restaurant on Church Street - called so because there are a couple of churches in the vicinity. The party zone also comprises the nearby M.G. Road, Brigade Road and Residency Road.
The bomb was apparently placed behind some flowerpots on the pavement outside the popular restaurant. A section of the pavement slabs caved in.
Bhavani, the victim, happened to be walking past Coconut Grove with Karthik when the device went off, Reddi said. She was rushed to the nearby Mallya Hospital in a critical state and died there, the police said.
Reddi admitted "there had been a threat perception in general in view of the festivities and due to various circumstances in and around the city" "But that has been generic and we have been alert," the top cop said but refused to elaborate.
Rumours on social media had swirled of late about terror attacks after the arrest of Biswas, the alleged IS propagandist.
The cop who led the team that arrested the executive was warned on Twitter that he would face a "revenge attack". Days later, WhatsApp messages floated around about a "revenge attack on the city".
The blast came a day after the police allowed pubs and restaurants in the area to stay open till 2am in the New Year week.
The deadline was 11pm earlier but was extended to 1am, only on Fridays and Saturdays, in June this year. It was not clear if today's incident would prompt the police to curtail the timings.
"We have deployed additional forces, dog squads and forensic teams to probe the incident. They are looking at all available traces and material which would be taken into account in the investigation," Reddi told reporters at the blast site.
The teams arrived a little after 9pm and were seen scouring the area, which was cordoned off from all sides.
"We have summoned experts from the internal security division, additional forces from the armed reserve and anti-sabotage teams to keep a watch on the city," the police chief said.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that he had called Karnataka chief minister P.C. Siddaramaiah and offered all assistance in the probe. Siddaramaiah urged people not to panic and said the situation was under control.
Union law minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who hails from the state, visited the spot. He termed the incident as "unfortunate" and said it shouldn't have happened in the "by and large peaceful city".
The last explosion in the city occurred in April 2013, with a powerful bomb going off outside the state BJP headquarters. Seventeen persons were injured.

BENGALURU: One woman died of wounds in an IED explosion on the busy Church Street in the heart of Bengaluru and three others were injured, triggering a red alert in the IT capital of the country and punctuating the run-up to New Year festivities with alarm late on Sunday. Bhavani, 37, succumbed to her wounds in a hospital, while her nephew Karthik, 21, was being treated.

The two others injured were friends who had just finished dinner and stepped out of a restaurant, Coconut Grove. The place where the bomb went off is just a few feet away from The Times of India office.

Police commissioner M N Reddi told reporters it was a "low-intensity explosion" triggered by an improvised explosive device. Police suspect the bomb was kept in a cloth bag between a row of plants and the compound wall of Coconut Grove. The family was in front of the main gate when the device went off. Bhavani took the brunt of the blast and was thrown to the middle of the road. Passersby bundled the injured into an autorickshaw and took them to Mallya Hospital.

"There was a threat perception to Bengaluru for some days, but the advisory was generic. We are on alert," Reddi said, adding it was too early to say who triggered the blast. The injuries were caused by shrapnel, the commissioner added. Additional reinforcements of KSRP have been sought.

"I condemn the Sunday night incident on Church Street. The aim seems to spoil the mood in the city which is gearing up for New Year celebrations. High alert has been declared across the city and extra police forces have been deployed in public places including bus stations, railway stations and airport. Special teams have been formed to nab those involved in the incident. Alert will be maintained in other major cities in the State. Public are requested not to fall prey to any rumours," said Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, union home minister Rajnath Singh is said to have held telephonic talks with Siddaramaiah and took stock of the situation.

The explosion left a trail of black soot on the white compound wall of the eatery. A pool of blood a couple of feet away on the middle of the road and a pair of slippers lying nearby were all that remained few minutes later. Police arrived at least 15 minutes after the blast.

Bhavani and Karthik were among eight members of a family, including three children, walking in front of Coconut Grove, a popular eatery on the street. They were heading to Amoeba, a gaming arena on the other side of the pavement, when the explosion occurred around 8.30pm.

The other two wounded are Sandeep H, 39, a resident of Ideal Homes, Rajarajeshwari Nagar. He was admitted to Hosmat with injuries to his left leg. A one-inch broad metallic pellet had ripped through his calf and was stuck in his knee. As Sandeep had just finished dinner, he could not be operated on for four hours. His friend, Vinay, works with IBM.

The blast ripped off bits of flesh from Karthik's left shoulder. Doctors told family members that Bhavani suffered a hole in the left part of her skull and they couldn't stop the bleeding. Karthik's sister Priya told TOI they were all walking on the pavement outside Coconut Grove, and the two injured were the last in the group.

"All of us passed the place when we heard a huge blast. My aunt was thrown to one side. My brother has a small injury on his back, but my aunt bled a lot even in the auto," she said. Scores of shocked people began screaming and many of them helped the family transport the injured. The area was cordoned off as bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were deployed.
