Main accused in Bardhaman blast case nabbed
The "Chief of the Bardhaman Module", Sajid was arrested by the West Bengal police on Saturday
In a major breakthrough in the on-going investigation in the "accidental blast" in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district, the West Bengal police arrested on Saturday arrested Sajid, whom the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has described as“Chief of the Bardhaman Module”.
Rajiv Kumar, the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police said that Sajid, a resident of Narayanganj in Bangladesh is a member of the Majlis-e-Shura, which is the central committee of the of the Jamaat-e-Mujahideen Bangladesh.
Mr. Kumar said that the police intercepted a courier carrying money and from there they got whereabouts of Sajid. During interrogation Sajid had confessed that he was involved in the blast.
“The ATS (anti terrorism squad) team was following an information about illegal money transaction and initially intercepted a courier who was to receive the money. The courier has agreed to keep Sajid ( provide shelter to him) for some time,” Mr Kumar said.
He was arrested under Section 41 of the Cr. P.C and will be handing him over to the NIA today itself.
The NIA has also declared a cash award of Rs 10 lakh leading to any information regarding Sajid’s arrest. As per information given by the NIA Sajid, aged 40 years is a “suspected national of Bangladesh”. He was staying near Lalgolaa Madrasa in West Bengal Mursidabad district before the explosion.
The NIA has arrested five persons in connection with the blast, which includes two women. The NIA had made its fifth arrest on Friday when they apprehended Zia-ul-Haque, a close associate of Rezaul Karim, another suspect in the blast from Malda district. Two persons died in the accidental blast inside a house at Khargragarh in Burdwan town on October 2. The NIA was handed over the probe a week later.
PTI adds:
Meanwhile, Zia-ul-Haque, who was arrested on Friday in connection with the Burdwan blast, was sent to seven-day NIA custody by a sessions court here.
Appearing before the court of Mumtaj Khan, NIA counsel Shyamal Ghosh prayed for 14 days’ remand for Haque, but the court granted seven days.
The NIA counsel pleaded that since the probe was in an early stage, a longer custody would enable the investigating agency to gather more information from the accused.
They said that Haque was a member of the Jamaat-ul- Mujahideen Bangladesh and was also in contact with absconding Yusuf Sheikh alias Moulana Yusuf.
The NIA had on Friday arrested Haque for allegedly indoctrinating youth for training by showing ‘Jihadi’ videos related to Gujarat and Assam violence.
