The body of the Indian student who died from injuries from a gang rape will be flown back to New Delhi from Singapore this afternoon between 3 and 4 pm.
The woman, who was Hindu, will be cremated, said the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore at a press conference at the embassy in Grange Road.
Her parents and two younger brothers will travel back with the body in the chartered flight.
Dr T.A.C. Raghavan, who did not reveal the student's name, said she had suffered a lot of injuries.
The woman died at 4.45am Saturday at the Mt Elizabeth Hospital where she had been flown in for treatment on Thursday.
Dr Raghavan and other embassy staff were with her family by her side when she died.
Earlier in the morning at the hospital after her death, reporters asked him about criticisms in India that she should not have been moved to another country till her condition was more stable.
He said then: "The effort was to give the best possible medical attention and medical treatment and our role in the High Commission was to facilitate that particular medical decision which was that she would get very good treatment in Mount Elizabeth Hospital."
He said that the doctors in Singapore tried their very best. "The team of doctors which had accompanied her from India had fully briefed the doctors here about the injuries suffered, treatment she had undergone, so I would say she received the best possible medical attention in both countries," he said.

Indian gang-rape victim's death: Manmohan Singh says he is "deeply saddened"
By nirmala ganapathy in new delhi
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says he is "deeply saddened" to hear that the 23-year-old Indian medical student has died from the injuries sustained in a gang rape.
He said early Saturday morning that he joined the nation in conveying his condolences to her family and friends. "I pray for the peace of the departed soul and hope that her family will have the strength to bear this grievous loss," he said in a statement.
"I want to tell them and the nation that while she may have lost her battle for life, it is up to us all to ensure that her death will not have been in vain.
"We have already seen the emotions and energies this incident has generated. These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change. It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channelize these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."
Mr Singh also urged calm as news of the death broke as India slept. Her brutal rape by six men had moved hundreds of young Indians to stage protests asking for speedy justice for her, and safety for women.
The student died at 4.45am on Saturday in Singapore's Mt Elizabeth Hospital, where she had been flown to on Thursday morning to seek further treatment.
The Singapore specialists who treated her said she was in an extremely critical condition when admitted and despite efforts, her condition continued to deteriorate. Her body has been sent to a mortuary and will be flown back to India, together with her parents and two brothers who came with her.
Mr Singh said there needs to be "a dispassionate debate and inquiry into the critical changes that are required in societal attitudes". He said the Government is examining, "on priority basis, the penal provisions that exist for such crimes and measures to enhance the safety and security of women".
"I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agenda to help us all reach the end that we all desire - making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in."
The Indian High Commission in Singapore is holding a press conference.

‘Rest in Peace, India’s Daughter’
ByKrishna Pokharel
Indian rights activists during a protest in Mumbai on Thursday demanding better safety for women.
Security forces were building up around India Gate in central Delhi early Saturday morning following news that the young woman who was gang-raped in a moving bus in the capital earlier this month had died.
Police locked down much of central Delhi, posting officers outside officials’ houses, closing metro stations and blocking central arteries around government buildings and India Gate, the monument where protests were held earlier this week.
At around 5.45 am local time, roads to the India Gate monument and Raisina Hill, where top government offices including the president’s palace are located, were heavily barricaded. This was the epicenter of last weekend’s demonstrations, when police fired tear gas and water cannons on crowds.
One police officer standing next to a barricade Saturday morning said the heavy security was in preparation for India’s Republic Day celebrations on Jan. 26. “It’s usual,” he said.
There was a somber initial response to news that the woman had died in the Singapore hospital where she had been airlifted for treatment last week.
“Rest in Peace, India’s Daughter,” and “Delhi Braveheart No More,” were the headlines on India’s leading English and Hindi news channels.
Some reported that preparations are underway to bring the body of the woman, who hasn’t been identified but was in her early 20s, back to India. An official at the High Commission of India in Singapore said any information about bringing the deceased’s body back to India would be shared with the media later in the morning.
Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan was among the first high profile Indian figures to express his condolences, tweeting early Saturday “Her body has passed away, but her soul shall forever stir our hearts.”
“Tears of anger are falling down,” wrote a Twitter user from Switzerland. Another in Dubai said: “There’s no clear solution to the mess apart from educating people in your own house. Wake up India !”
And another, whose profile said she is from London, tweeted: “God I pray she has not died in vain but to usher in change.”
The woman was raped and beaten by a group of men on a bus on the night of Dec. 16. Six men, including the bus driver, have been arrested and charged with offenses including rape and kidnapping, according to Delhi police.

by FP Staff 27 mins ago 9:33 AM
The gangrape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests died of her injuries on Saturday in a Singapore hospital, potentially threatening fresh protests in the country.
The 23-year-old medical student, severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, had been flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday for specialist treatment. “We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 a.m. on Dec 29, 2012 (2045 GMT Friday). Her family and officials from the High Commission (embassy) of India were by her side,” Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.
10 Metro stations shut down in Delhi
Ten Metro stations in Central Delhi were closed down today for an indefinite period as a precautionary measure by Delhi Police to prevent agitators from reaching India Gate to protest the death of the gangrape victim.
The stations which will remain out of bounds for people are Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Race Course, Jor Bagh and Khan Market.
However, inter-change facility will be available at Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat stations, DMRC officials said.
The decision to close down the Metro stations was taken by the Delhi Police which is making all out efforts to prevent protesters from reaching India Gate. They have already blocked the entire India Gate area.
Home Minister pledges to strengthen laws
Condoling the death of the gangrape victim, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today pledged to strengthen laws to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
He also said that the real tribute to the 23-year-old victim will be to ensure maximum punishment to the culprits. In a message to the family, he said, "A real tribute to her will be to ensure maximum punishment to the culprits.
"I pledge to work to strengthen the laws and ensure that such an incident never gets repeated again," he said.
The girl, who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted by six men in a moving bus in south Delhi, died in a Singapore hospital early this morning after battling for life for the past 13 days.
