Now, schoolchildren defy policemen, reach Jantar Mantar, shock with demands

Agencies Posted online: Mon Dec 24 2012, 12:46 hrs

New Delhi : A day after violent protests rocked the capital, scores of people, mostly school students, today gathered at Jantar Mantar and asked the government to provide speedy justice in the gangrape case and ensure prompt and stringent punishment for the rapists.

The schoolchildren expressed their shock at the depraved nature of the Delhi gangrape and highlighted problems faced by young girls in their schools when they travel to and back from school.

Shockingly, though they are so young, they expressed their desire that rapists must be executed to warn all those who molest women to beware of what may befall them.

Their vociferous and extreme demands shocked the very stoic and experienced policemen. They were standing around looking bemused.

Police personnel in large numbers have been deployed across dharna-hotspots like India Gate, Raisina Hills and Jantar Mantar.

The protesters shouted slogans demanding quick justice be given to the raped 23-year-old girl on Sunday night in a moving bus here.

Some of the protesters, who tried to march towards India Gate, one of the areas of yesterday's clashes, were prevented by the police and were diverted to Jantar Mantar which is the only spot that has been exempted from prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC clamped in New Delhi district, banning assembly of four or more persons.

Today's protests appeared muted as the police did not allow anybody to reach anywhere near India Gate or Raisina Hill, which witnessed pitched battles between the security forces and protesters yesterday.

There were also small protests near Safdarjung Hospital, where the rape victim is undergoing treatment.

Violent protests had erupted yesterday at India Gate following which the police had lobbed 250 teargas shells and sprayed water jets besides using force to disperse the agitators.
