New Delhi: While speculations have been rife on early General Elections – sometime in November this year – the Election Commission has sought Rs 330 crore to buy over four lakh electronic voting machines.
The reason cited in a note put up by the Commission to the Centre is the upcoming Assembly election in a few states and the “forthcoming General Elections”.
The timing is significant as the Commission has set the election process rolling.
Parties like the Samajwadi Party, NCP and the TDP have been saying that the country is heading for early polls.
The Congress has denied any move to advance the general elections and has been consistently saying that the Manmohan Singh government would complete its full term.
General elections are due mid 2014.
